*Winner of the Highland Book Award, 2009*

In 1554, at the age of fifteen, Lady Jane Grey is forced to marry. Manipulated onto the throne of England by her powerful father-in-law, she is desperately unhappy. Although Ned, who befriends her, cannot prevent her execution, he shows his love for her in an unexpected and poignant way.

“A beautiful interpretation of the life of Lady Jane Grey. This stunning and lyrical tale will hold readers captive and haunt them long after the last page…” Borders

“vivid and poetic” Ann Turnbull

I have always been interested in Lady Jane Grey – but she was always just a line in a history book: the unhappy Nine Day Queen. If you visit Bradgate Park in Leicestershire, where the ruins of her home still stand, you will see that flowers are always tied to the gate on the anniversary of her death.

Short Stories

Pauline Francis and Tilly NevinI am the judge of the poems and stories for the World Book Day/Evans Short Stories Competition. I had a wonderful time visiting magical and mysterious worlds, worlds past and present and to come, worlds of horror and happiness. I travelled by real trains and ghost trains – and I flew, though not in an aeroplane. You can read the selection in two anthologies published by Evans in March.

This is a photograph of Tilly Nevin and me when I presented her with her prize at Beaconsfield High School in Hertfordshire.
